Article: Capital Projects Team
In the first of an ongoing series of articles to help keep the public informed about happenings at the Port of Friday Harbor we are featuring our Capital Project Team.
“Not your usual fix-it group”
The Port has a very talented team of workers known internally as the capital projects team. The team consists of first-rate designers, construction specialists, welders, and electricians. It is not hard to imagine that there is no project that they cannot design and build.
They are responsible for the Jensen shipyard re-build, after the collapse of the boat houses four years ago. They have designed and manufactured floating docks that were purchased by the marina at Port Townsend as well as at the Port at Kingston.
The Port’s team is building replacement docks for many of the San Juan County marine facilities. These floating docks are constructed with the same welded HDPE floats, timber framing, and fiberglass grating as the Port’s own replacement docks.
The team has also manufactured and installed new floating docks at Shipyard Cove, saving the Port hundreds of thousands of dollars if purchased from an outside supplier. The team is also on schedule to widen the breakwater at Jensen’s plus add an extension to the main dock during the next two months.

Future projects awaiting County permits will be announced by the Port during the next several months when more information becomes available. Needless-to-say, the Capital Projects team has lots on its plate right now and you can expect to see new and better services for our customers.
