Notice: American Camp Trail section to be diverted

The Port of Friday Harbor is diverting a short section of the San Juan Island American Camp Trail adjacent to the Friday Harbor Airport runway.

The location of this section of the trail falls on Port property that is planned for a commercial lease by a local business. The 350’ section of the trail is currently in the path of expansion plans for the tenant. The Port’s solution is to build a rerouted trail slightly down slope through a scenic and dry section of forest.

During this winter the Port will construct the new trail and have it in service before the upper trail is closed. Port Director Todd Nicholson states that the new section will be constructed to a much higher standard and its location will be a great alternative to the adjacent lower trail which is often flooded.

The American Camp Trail system on San Juan Island is a popular hiking venue for islanders and visitors from across the country.
