Best Management Practices

1. All self-employed boat workers and independent contractors must register with the harbormaster and receive approval before beginning any work on marina property.

2. Owners may undertake boat projects as needed to maintain the vessel’s safety, appearance and utility. New or substantial exterior work encompassing more than 25% of the hull’s surface must be reviewed and approved by the harbormaster.

3. Port management expects all vessel owners to adhere to the following Best Management Practices.

Engines and Bilges

Use absorbent bilge pads to soak up oil and fuel.
Recycle oil and diesel fuel properly. A waste oil trailer is located in the marina.
Dispose of gasoline and antifreeze properly by contacting San Juan County Hazardous Waste Disposal.
Drain oil from oil filters and dispose of filters properly.
Oil pads and filters must drain for 24 hours and be double-bagged before disposing in dumpster.
Do not discharge bilge water if there is a sheen to it.
Do not dispose of any fuels or used oil in marina dumpsters.

Painting and Varnishing

Limit the amount of open solvents or paint on the dock or floats to one gallon.
Always mix paint and epoxy over a tarp.
Always use a drip pan and drop cloth.
Spray painting is not allowed within the marina.
Dispose of remaining bits of paint by brushing it on an old board.
Do not dispose of paints or solvents in marina dumpsters.
Contact the harbormaster for information on disposal of paint and varnish.

Surface Preparation

Use biodegradable cleansers and teak cleaners.
Use tarps liberally to capture all scrapings, debris and drips.
Stretch tarps between side of boat and dock when working over the water.
Vacuum dust and debris hourly or every time the tarp is moved.
Reverse the boat in the slip to work on the far side.

Sewage

Untreated sewage should never be discharged directly overboard.
Store sewage in holding tanks and dispose of properly at pumpout station.
Use shore-side facilities whenever possible.

Solid Waste Disposal

Dispose of all garbage in proper shore-side receptacles.
Allow empty paint cans to dry completely before disposing in the trash.
Recycle cardboard, aluminum and glass in designated recycling bins.

Chemical Storage

Purchase only the amount of chemicals and paint needed for a project.
Review your storage of paint and solvents every six months and properly dispose of old products.
Do not store more than a total of three gallons of paint and solvents.

ALL HAZARDOUS WASTE MUST BE DISPOSED OF PROPERLY.
CONTACT THE HARBORMASTER FOR MORE INFORMATION OR CALL 1-800-RECYCLE.
